// a giant problem
The Israelites were at war with a people called the Philistines. The Philistines had a secret weapon — a giant warrior named Goliath. He was over nine feet tall, wore heavy armor, and carried a massive spear. Every day he would shout across the battlefield, daring any Israelite soldier to fight him. Every soldier was terrified. No one would go.
📖 The Story
A young shepherd boy named David came to the battlefield to bring food to his brothers who were soldiers. He heard Goliath shouting and was not afraid. David told King Saul he would fight the giant. Everyone thought he was crazy — he was just a boy with no armor and no sword. But David had something more powerful. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and walked toward Goliath with only his sling. Goliath laughed at him. David said: "You come with a sword and a spear, but I come in the name of the Lord." David swung his sling, the stone flew, and it struck Goliath right in the forehead. The giant fell. The battle was won.
// who was david?
A shepherd — David spent his days watching over sheep in the fields
The youngest brother — nobody expected much from him
A musician — David played the harp and wrote songs called Psalms
A future king — God had already chosen David to be the next king of Israel
// why david was not afraid
David had already faced dangerous animals while protecting his sheep — lions and bears. He had seen God help him defeat them. So when he saw Goliath, he did not see an impossible enemy. He saw another problem that God could help him solve.
David's courage did not come from his size or his weapons. It came from his faith — his trust that God was with him.
💭 Think About It
Have you ever faced something that felt like your own "Goliath" — something that seemed too big or too scary? What helped you face it? What do you think gave David the courage to walk toward the giant when everyone else ran away?
